Trekking & Glacier Walking in the Alps / Chamonix

Glacier trekking is the first basis of mountaineering as it revolves around the high mountain environment.

In using the necessary equipment (crampons, rope,etc) the majority of glacier trekking involves walking on the glacier where the tecnicality is of a minimum but awareness of the terrain instability should remain essential.

For a regular experienced hiker.

Several possibilities available, from a day hike crossing the Vallée Blanche, to a 6 day Chamonix - Zermatt trek.

 

Glacier hiking Day

La Mer de Glace

La Mer de Glace or 'Sea of Ice' is one of the most well known in the Alps.  Its source begins at around 3700m altitude in the Midi basin and flows down in the direction of Chamonix to around 1500m altitude.

Whether alone with the guide, together with family or friends, it is an ideal introduction for a 1st experience in a High Mountain environment.

Vallée Blanche crossing

In 30 minutes, the Aiguille du Midi cable car propulses us to an altitude of 3842m, permitting us to have access to one of the most vast glacier areas in the Alps. The Mont Blanc seems so near, yet so far, other 4000m summits surround us, and so it is here in this high Mountain decor, that we will effectuate the crossing from France to Italy, with its gaping crevasses and gigantic towering ice formations.

Les Aiguilles Dorées Tour

This magnificent trek will cover at least 5 different glaciers around the Aiguilles Dorées, a statuesque rock formation amid an ocean of ice. With an overnight stay in the Aiguilles Dorées bivouac, feeling all alone in the world, and facing the ever imposing North Face of the Aiguille d'Argentière, this excursion with all its beauty, is certainly a 'must' in glacier trekking within the Mont Blanc range.

Aiguille du midi ascent:

The mythic silhouette of the Aiguille du Midi, is normally reached by cable car from Chamonix, but in following the footsteps of the 1st mountaineers, the marvellous world of this High Mountain glacier is be discovered.  This programme includes climbing rock faces equipped with ladders, chains and cables, crampon technics on the ice, climbing ice slopes, crevasse crossing, overnight stay in the Requin refuge hut, where the welcome is as outstanding as the setting in which it is located and concluding this excursion with the Aiguille du Midi ridge ascent.

Mer de Glace Balcony crossing :

With your guide, this trek, with a touch of 'verticality' is situated around the junction of several glaciers. Chamonix - Zermatt :

This is the Ultimate in glacier trekking. Joining the 2 mountaineering capitals over the space of a few days with the encounter of a different glacier each day.  Breathtaking in the sense of the word and physically, as a majority of ascents are around 3800m altitude and the sense of achievement on seeing the Matterhorn  after a truly exceptional trek.
